Gold Shirt Mentoring Program

The Gold Shirt Mentoring Program is a student leadership initiative that connects upperclassmen with incoming freshmen to help them build confidence, make connections, and successfully transition to high school.

Gold Shirt mentors are selected from 11th and 12th grade students who demonstrate leadership, responsibility, and a commitment to supporting others. Mentors provide both one-on-one and small group mentoring throughout the school year.

As school leaders, Gold Shirt mentors:

Welcome new students during freshman orientation
Help incoming students on the first day of school
Lead activities during 9th Grade Cougar Time
Provide individual mentoring and guidance
Assist with school events, including career fairs and other student activities

The program is designed to support all 9th grade students. While some freshmen may be paired with a mentor for additional one-on-one support, every 9th grade student will have opportunities to interact with Gold Shirt mentors through school-wide activities and classroom visits each marking period.

The Gold Shirt Mentoring Program helps create a welcoming school community where freshmen feel supported, connected, and prepared for success at Schalick.

PEP Mentoring Program

The PEP (Peers Engaging Peers) Mentoring Program provides meaningful mentoring opportunities that foster positive relationships between high school seniors and younger learners throughout the district. The program focuses on building confidence, strengthening communication skills, and encouraging positive social and emotional growth.

Senior mentors are selected through the counseling department and enroll in a mentoring course as part of their school schedule. Students may participate in either daily mentoring or an early release/mentoring experience. PEP Mentors earn pass/fail credits for their participation.

Depending on the placement, mentors may:

Meet individually with mentees in the counseling office
Provide one-on-one support to a student in the classroom
Assist teachers by working with students as a whole group or small groups within the classroom

Mentees are identified through referrals from parents or guardians, school counselors, teachers, and other school staff members. The PEP Mentoring Program creates valuable connections across our school community, promoting growth, belonging, and success for both mentors and mentees.

All of the high school mentors are trained annually in a variety of ways. All mentors go through training at Camp Edge. There is also training provided by school staff and by the specialists at LMTI (Lindsey Meyer Teen Institute) who have been providing training to youth and adults for over 30 years.
